Molten Core Heat and Onyxia Changes SoD Phase 4

INTRODUCTION

Hello everyone and welcome to another InstantCarry blog post. Since last night there have been thoughts going around in our minds on what actually happened here, and if there are any explanations for the ‘disaster’ that is the Molten Core Heat system, as well as the ‘epic’ final Boss of the Raid after Ragnaros.

On top of that we’ve seen changes come to Onyxia, as well as some other things that we will definitely cover. The much awaited release of Onyxia and Molten core happened at 22:00 CEST last night. It only took a bit over 2 hours for the guild from Living Flame-EU Alliance to clear the whole Molten Core Heat 3 Raid, with all the Boss ‘redesigns’.

All in all, as a spectator you can’t help but not enjoy anything that you’ve seen. The Boss mechanics are the same as they were in Season of Mastery, on top of that, the bugs that should’ve been fixed with a few minutes of actually play-testing a Boss, were obviously not done. Having Ragnaros stay outside of lava when he’s in the ‘submerge’ phase are just a couple of things to note.

Ah well, since we got that off our chest, lets move on and see what Heat levels and other changes are all about.

Season of Discovery – Molten Core Heat Levels Explained

Entering the Molten Core in Season of Discovery introduces a new mechanic: Heat levels. These Heat levels increase the dungeon’s difficulty and provide increased number of rewards. When you first zone into Molten Core, speak with a Hydraxian Waterlords NPC at the entrance to choose one of three different Heat levels—Sweltering, Blistering, or Molten.

You can swap Heat levels at any time if things get too challenging. Just talk to the NPC at the entrance when you’re not in combat. You can also change Heat levels after using Aqual Quintessence to douse boss runes, as NPCs will appear to assist you.

Sweltering Heat – Level 1

Sweltering Heat is the easiest mode, designed for most groups. It’s suitable for those less prepared for the Heat—requiring fewer consumables, fewer fire resist buffs, and overall less preparation.

Blistering Heat – Level 2

Blistering Heat is a normal mode that demands more coordination and preparation. Groups should have a moderate amount of consumables, enchants, buffs, and nominal fire resistance. This mode provides the same gear rewards as Sweltering Heat but with an additional drop for most bosses.

  • Recommended Fire Resistance: +96 or higher

Molten Heat – Level 3

Molten Heat is for skilled groups ready to face a tougher challenge. The rewards include all items from Blistering Heat plus a few additional items and unique weapon cosmetics from later in the Raid.

  • Recommended Fire Resistance: +226 or higher

Why is Fire resistance important?

In short, if you are missing the fire resistance, you just randomly die.

With each Heat level comes increased difficulty, requiring more fire resistance. In original World of Warcraft, Resistance was an inconsistent statistic—sometimes fully resisting damage, other times not. Resistances work the same way now, but Blistering Heat and Molten Heat require specific amounts of fire resistance for consistent progression. Without the necessary resistance, some mechanics can quickly overwhelm your group.

Understanding Resistance Gear

Resistance fights in World of Warcraft have always been contentious. While iconic, they often require players to wear sub-optimal gear for survival. This mechanic aims to emphasize preparation and gear progression. Early in your Molten Core runs on higher difficulties, you might need to wear less powerful fire resistance gear. As you progress and obtain better items, including tier sets, these pieces will provide the necessary resistance, allowing you to focus more on your optimal gear.

New Boss – The Molten Core

When we talk about creativity in terms of design as well as names, we are glad to say that we’ve reached the ‘pinnacle’. If it wasn’t obvious enough that Blizzard is using Season of Mastery adaptations in Season of Discovery for all the Boss mechanics, it will become real when you see the apocalyptic Boss called “The Molten Core”. Yes, you heard it right the hidden, overpowered, secret new boss that you get to face after defeating Ragnaros is called the same as the actual Raid.

When it comes to how it looks, well – see for yourself.

The Molten Core Heat - MC Secret Boss

Aaaand they did it again! It’s a meatball or better yet – A BLOB. The Amazing and tireless developers for Season of Discovery have come to the conclusion of merging an egg with C’thun and they got the final boss of the Molten Core Raid called “The Molten Core”.

Even though we can see where they are coming from in terms of the name, the design and Boss fight for this was just sad. If it was an egg that hatches and had a phase 2, or if it was something similar to fighting Illidan after the Gul’dan fight in Legion, it would show some dedication, but this is just disappointing.

MC Final Boss Mechanics – The Molten Core

There are a few things to note regarding this blob, I mean boss. They are:

  • There are FOUR water elementals that are friendly, and they channel water into the blob.
  • The blob randomly gazes and shoots fire at Players, doing mediocre damage.
  • Some fire elemental adds spawn and attack the water elemental adds, and you have to aoe them so they don’t die.
  • The boss has an energy bar and that is slowly filling up, but is delayed by the water elementals.
  • It seems that if the boss get to 100 energy he was supposed to do something, but he didn’t live that long for anyone to see what it does.

That’s about it. This boss is an optional challenge and does not drop unique or exclusive loot. Instead, it offers tier gear tokens and other items that drop from other bosses in Molten Core. This design ensures that groups attempting Molten Heat do not feel pressured to clear every boss weekly to obtain exclusive power-impacting gear.

Summary

  • Sweltering Heat: Easy mode for less prepared groups.
  • Blistering Heat: Normal mode requiring moderate preparation.
  • Molten Heat: Hard mode for skilled groups with additional rewards.
  • New Boss: Optional challenge in Molten Heat with non-exclusive loot.

Season of Discovery Onyxia Encounter Changes

When it comes to Onyxia, there was not much effort put into it. Not like it was put in elsewhere, but still. There are a few things to note, those are:

  • When you engage Onyxia, a Dragon add will spawn.
  • You need to deal with this add before attacking her and while letting the tank get aggro.
  • The reason why you kill this add first is because he has a debuff that he leaves on tanks and he also cleaves.
  • Once the add is dead the fight is the same, except it seems adds come more frequently.
  • Onyxia is viewed as a World Boss and you can no longer parse on her for your wow logs.
  • It seems she drops tier items from MC instead of the Tier 2 Helm.

That’s about it when it comes to Onyxia. There are a few other things that we’d like to mention.

SoD Phase 4 Devilcore set Hotfix

The new Devilcore Set will no longer drop only from King Mosh in Un’goro. So far there were no other sightings, but they will probably drop from the Hounds in Molten Core or maybe the Blackrock Eruption even mobs…
