Black Temple Attunement in WoW The Burning Crusade Classic is one of the longest attunement chains in the game, combining solo quests, 5-man dungeon quests, and 25-man raid requirements into a single chain that must be completed in order. The chain starts in Shadowmoon Valley with the Tablets of Baa’ri quests — which differ slightly depending on whether your character is aligned with The Aldor or The Scryers — and progresses through a series of story quests involving Akama and the Ashtongue before reaching the raid-level steps. Two 25-man raid quests are required: Ruse of the Ashtongue inside Hyjal Summit and An Artifact From the Past inside Serpentshrine Cavern. This means Black Temple attunement also requires Mount Hyjal attunement to be completed first. At the end of the chain, turning in A Distraction for Akama to Xi’ri rewards the Medallion of Karabor — the physical key needed to enter the Black Temple raid, which must stay in your bags at all times. About Black Temple Attunement
Black Temple’s attunement is long by design — it was intended to represent a full story arc leading up to the confrontation with Illidan, and the quest chain reflects that with a meaningful number of steps across multiple zones and content types. The chain begins in Shadowmoon Valley with the Tablets of Baa’ri, which has a short faction-specific section depending on Aldor or Scryer allegiance, before merging into a shared questline through the Warden’s Cage, Akama’s storyline, the Ata’mal Terrace, and eventually the raid-level steps.
The two raid requirements are where most players get stuck. Ruse of the Ashtongue requires entering Hyjal Summit — meaning Hyjal attunement must be done first — and completing a specific quest step inside the raid. An Artifact From the Past requires returning to Serpentshrine Cavern for a quest inside that raid. Both need active raid access and a group willing to accommodate the quest objectives, which adds coordination overhead on top of the already lengthy solo chain.
At the end of the chain, A Distraction for Akama is turned in to Xi’ri in Shadowmoon Valley, and the Medallion of Karabor is placed in your bags. This medallion is the literal key to Black Temple — without it in your inventory, you cannot enter the raid instance. Keep it in your bags at all times once obtained.
With Phase 3 of TBC Classic Anniversary opening both Hyjal Summit and Black Temple in Summer 2026, getting the full Black Temple attunement done ahead of launch means you can walk straight into Illidan’s sanctum on day one without scrambling through a long chain during launch week when groups and raid slots are at their most competitive.
