PoE 2 Setting and Lore
Ogham: The Opening Act
Path of Exile 2 opens with a grim and dark scene set 20 years after the events of the first game. The game introduces Ogham, a forest filled with untold horrors, where a group of adventurers set out to investigate the strange happenings in the woods. However, they are quickly overtaken by the creatures lurking in the darkness, with each adventurer falling one by one. This mysterious setting sets the tone for the darker, more foreboding journey ahead, as you venture deeper into the unknown.
Major Characters
The opening act introduces a number of compelling characters, chief among them being The Hooded One, a mysterious immortal who may hold the key to the game’s greater lore. This being might be a remnant from an ancient civilization, which players will uncover as they progress. Players will also meet The Iron Count, the main antagonist of Act 1, who wields the Seed of Corruption. This powerful artifact contains the remnants of The Beast, an ancient being responsible for spreading corruption across Wraeclast. The Iron Count’s ambitions to harness this dark power will set the stage for the conflict you face throughout the game.
The Campaign
PoE 2’s campaign begins with a harrowing execution, where you (and any party members) are the sole survivors, setting the stage for a fight against corruption. This execution serves as a catalyst for your journey, where you’ll battle enemies, gather powerful skill gems, craft gear, and take down 50 unique bosses as you progress through the game’s campaign. The first chapters introduce you to both familiar and new lands, including the Vastiri Desert and the Utzaal Ruins, each offering distinct environments and challenging encounters.
Acts and Locations
The early portion of the campaign takes players through Act 1, where they battle enemies and uncover the mysteries surrounding the Iron Count and the Seed of Corruption. Following that, players will venture into the Vastiri Desert, an arid wasteland full of dangerous creatures and new challenges. As you continue your journey, you’ll explore the Utzaal Ruins, a jungle setting filled with ancient secrets and dark powers. Once you’ve completed Acts 1-3, the game switches to Cruel difficulty, where bosses and enemies are remixed for an even greater challenge. This section sets the stage for Acts 4-6, which are not part of the early access but will offer additional content upon full release.
Classes and Ascendancies
PoE 2 introduces 12 playable classes, each with their own distinct playstyle and ascendancy options. While the full game will offer all 12 classes, the early access will feature only six: the Monk, Warrior, Ranger, Mercenary, Witch, and Sorceress. Each class can evolve through the Trials of Ascension, where you complete challenges that unlock your character’s true potential. Upon full release, each class will have three ascendancy options, but for early access, only two will be available. The flexibility of the class system means players will be able to explore many different playstyles, from tanky warriors to ranged elemental mages.
Warrior Ascendancy
The Warrior class is designed for players who enjoy wielding massive weapons and engaging in brutal melee combat. The Warrior is a Strength-based class, with a focus on powerful Slams and Warcries. Slams are devastating, area-of-effect melee skills that can deal heavy damage to multiple enemies at once. The Warrior also has access to Shield Skills, allowing them to block incoming attacks, making them ideal for tanking enemies while dishing out powerful blows. Two possible ascension paths for the Warrior are Warbringer and Titan. The Warbringer class focuses on totems and Warcries to control the battlefield, while the Titan ascends to a true powerhouse, enhancing their Slam abilities and becoming a master of heavy damage and stuns.
Sorceress Ascendancy
The Sorceress is an elemental master, controlling fire, ice, and lightning. As an Intelligence-based class, the Sorceress excels at dealing devastating damage with powerful elemental spells. The class can specialize in one of three elemental types, or use dual specialization to combine multiple elements for even greater destructive power. Two ascension options for the Sorceress are Stormweaver and Chronomancer. The Stormweaver specializes in lightning-based attacks, amplifying damage through critical hits and lightning storms, while the Chronomancer manipulates time itself, freezing enemies and rewinding time for tactical advantages.
Mercenary Ascendancy
The Mercenary class introduces an exciting new gameplay style inspired by First-Person Shooters (FPS). This class uses crossbows to deal damage at long range, with several different shot types, including Burst Shots, Rapid Shots, and Power Shots. The Mercenary also has access to a variety of Grenades and Artillery Ballistae for additional support. As a Strength and Dexterity-based class, the Mercenary’s gameplay emphasizes mobility, positioning, and tactical use of ranged attacks. Two ascension paths for the Mercenary are Witchhunter and Gemling Legionaire. The Witchhunter uses arcane magic to shield themselves from damage and interrupt enemy spells, while the Gemling Legionaire focuses on enhancing their skill gems and increasing their offensive power.
Monk Ascendancy
The Monk is a highly mobile, Intelligence and Dexterity-based class that specializes in using quarterstaffs to deal elemental damage. The Monk’s ability to quickly dash into and out of combat, along with powerful elemental skills, makes this class highly dynamic. The Monk’s ascension paths, Invoker and Acolyte of Chayula, each offer distinct playstyles. The Invoker excels at harnessing elemental forces, channeling raw power into devastating attacks, while the Acolyte of Chayula delves into chaos magic, using darkness and chaos to overwhelm enemies and protect themselves.
Ranger Ascendancy
The Ranger class returns as one of PoE’s most beloved characters. With a focus on Dexterity, the Ranger is skilled with a bow, using elemental damage types like Lightning, Poison, and Cold to outmaneuver and strike from range. The Deadeye ascension focuses on dealing heavy damage by firing multiple projectiles, while the Pathfinder focuses on improving Flask usage and leveraging poisons. Rangers can inflict Poison effects that deal damage over time or use Cold skills to freeze enemies and escape attacks. Their mobility, combined with deadly ranged abilities, makes them versatile on the battlefield.
Witch Ascendancy
The Witch is a master of Chaos and Bone skills, specializing in summoning minions to do her bidding. The Witch can build an army of undead, from skeletal warriors to powerful arsonists, to overwhelm enemies. Her ascendancy paths, Infernalist and Bloodmage, offer different playstyles. The Infernalist summons a Hellhound to fight alongside her, while using Hellfire to empower her spells. The Bloodmage sacrifices health to gain powerful boosts to damage and life leech, transforming the Witch into a high-risk, high-reward spellcaster.
Skills in Path of Exile 2
In Path of Exile 2, Skill Gems are the key to unleashing powerful abilities. There are three primary categories of skill gems:
- Active Skills: These are the primary skills used to deal damage or affect the battlefield. Active skills can range from elemental spells to melee attacks, and each skill has its own attributes and effects.
- Support Skills: These enhance or modify active skills. They can increase damage, change attack speed, or even add new effects like additional projectiles or elemental properties.
- Spirit Skills: These are buffs, auras, and triggers that require a special resource known as Spirit. Spirit is reserved to provide passive benefits, like healing over time or increasing your damage output. Using these effectively can drastically change your playstyle and make you more powerful in combat.
These skills can be combined in a variety of ways to suit different playstyles, offering nearly endless customization. Whether you’re a tank, a spellcaster, or a ranged attacker, the variety of skill combinations ensures every build feels unique.
Crafting and Items
Crafting in PoE 2 has evolved, offering new and powerful ways to modify items. As you progress through the game, you will find a variety of Currency Items that can alter the properties of your gear. Items are divided into Normal, Magic, Rare, and Unique categories. Normal items can be upgraded to Magic or Rare items using special crafting currencies like Transmutation Orbs and Exalted Orbs.
In addition to these, Ezomyte Runes can be socketed into gear to further enhance its properties, and Soul Cores offer even more customization, enabling powerful buffs when equipped. As you delve deeper into PoE 2’s world, you’ll unlock new crafting systems and mechanics, allowing you to fine-tune your gear for maximum efficiency.
Trials and Ascension
The Trials of Ascension are a major part of PoE 2’s progression system. These challenges test your skills and allow you to unlock powerful bonuses known as Ascensions. As you complete these trials, you’ll have the option to specialize your character’s abilities and gain access to new powers. Some trials, like the Trial of Sekhemas, introduce unique mechanics where your resource is Honor instead of health. This creates a new layer of strategy, where you must manage Honor while completing increasingly difficult rooms. Other trials, such as the Trial of the Chaos God, involve a gauntlet of challenges with escalating difficulty, culminating in a boss fight that tests your build and abilities to the limit.
Endgame: The Atlas of Worlds
In PoE 2, the endgame is divided into two distinct segments: the early Cruel difficulty content and the Atlas of Worlds. Once you hit level 65, you’ll unlock the Atlas of Worlds, which allows you to explore procedurally generated zones full of randomized enemies, rewards, and bosses. Waystones are used to navigate through these areas, each offering different types of monsters and challenges. The Atlas expands as you progress, offering increasingly difficult encounters and valuable rewards.
To enhance your endgame experience, you’ll also be able to unlock Atlas Passive Points that can be used to specialize your Atlas for better loot or to make encounters even more challenging. Whether you’re hunting down Pinnacle Bosses or tackling the vast array of League Mechanics, the Atlas is where the most challenging and rewarding content awaits.
League Mechanics and Beyond
The League Mechanics in Path of Exile 2 are designed to challenge players and provide unique rewards. Breach, for example, introduces Breachsplinters which can be used to create powerful breach bosses. Expedition tasks you with unearthing valuable relics, while Rituals allow you to resurrect enemies for tribute, granting powerful buffs and loot. Delirium introduces a fog that makes everything in your map more dangerous but rewards you with increased loot and special crafting materials. The Beyond mechanic, on the other hand, introduces monsters from a parallel dimension that overwhelm your maps with increased difficulty.
CONCLUSION
Path of Exile 2 is shaping up to be an incredible sequel, expanding on the core gameplay mechanics that made the original such a hit while introducing new classes, mechanics, and a revamped endgame experience. Whether you’re into powerful skill combinations, deep crafting systems, or challenging endgame content, PoE 2 has something for every player.
