Path of Exile 2: Major Endgame Changes in Patch 0.3.1

INTRODUCTION
Grinding Gear Games is preparing the next big shake-up to Path of Exile 2’s endgame with Patch 0.3.1. While the much larger 0.4.0 content update is on the horizon, developers decided to roll out several mechanical adjustments early to smooth progression and enhance core systems. This update focuses on improving currency use, adjusting Tablets and Towers, refining Maps, rebalancing the Atlas Tree, and increasing Citadel accessibility — all aimed at creating a more streamlined and rewarding endgame loop.
Before we begin check out the Video from the Game Director J0nathan Rodgers!
Major Patch Changes PoE 2 Patch 0.3.1 – Jonathan Rodgers (Video)
Alchemy Orb Changes
Alchemy Orbs had lost much of their purpose with the introduction of tiered currency in 0.3.0. Patch 0.3.1 gives them a new role:
They can now be used on Magic items, upgrading them into Rares with four random modifiers.
This change restores their importance in the crafting loop, particularly for Maps, where fast and flexible rolling is essential.
Towers and Tablets Adjustments
One of the biggest shifts involves how Tablets integrate with Maps.
Key changes:
Tablets can now be applied to every Map, making their use more consistent.
The ceiling of how much content a single Map can hold has been lowered — but Tablet modifiers have been buffed by 2–3x to balance this out.
Examples of buffed modifiers:
Collector’s: now 10–30% increased item rarity (previously 7–10%).
Teeming: now 25–70% increased magic monsters (previously 15–25%).
Strongboxes: now 50–100% increased chance to contain Strongboxes (previously 30–50%).
New modifiers introduced:
of the Devoted – Area contains an additional Shrine.
of the Antiquarian – Area contains an additional Strongbox.
Crystallised – Area contains an additional Essence.
Exiled – Area is inhabited by an additional Rogue Exile.
Azmeri’s – Area contains an additional Azmeri Spirit.
Summoner’s – Area contains an additional Summoning Circle.
of the Summoning – Area has 25–50% increased chance to contain a Summoning Circle.
Other Tablet info:
Unique Tablets have their own number of uses.
Reforging combines remaining uses, but cannot exceed the max value.
Uses are now clearly displayed on the item’s icon.
Existing Atlas-applied Tablets remain unaffected.
Map Size Reductions
Certain Maps were disproportionately long to navigate. Patch 0.3.1 reduces their size, cutting down clear times without lowering density.
Maps adjusted:
Augury, Bastille, Blooming Field, Channel, Epitaph, Fortress, Grimhaven, Hidden Grotto, Oasis, Penitentiary, Rupture, Savannah, Slick, Vaal City, Wetlands
Atlas Tree Changes
Because of core system adjustments, the Atlas Tree has been updated.
Notables that applied universally now distinguish between regular and Powerful Map Bosses.
Example: Crystal Realm now only applies to Powerful Map Bosses, though the effective Essence outcome remains unchanged.
Fit for a King and most other nodes still apply broadly.
Adjustments were also made to Towers integration, keeping overall balance similar pre- and post-patch.
Citadels
Citadel spawn rates have been increased by 66%, making progression through this system significantly smoother.
Other Improvements
Patch 0.3.1 also includes quality-of-life upgrades and bug fixes:
Ground effects (Chilled, Shocked, Ignited) now cover at least 66% less area on average, scaling even better in lower-tier Waystones.
Fixed Map Boss issues where multi-phase bosses had drastically lower HP in later phases — bosses are now more consistent and dangerous.
Various smaller optimizations and fixes will be detailed in the full patch notes.
CONCLUSION
Patch 0.3.1 represents a major step forward for Path of Exile 2’s endgame experience. By improving the functionality of Alchemy Orbs, reworking Tablets, shortening Map layouts, and boosting Citadel accessibility, GGG is addressing community concerns while laying the foundation for even larger changes in 0.4.0.
The update strikes a balance between streamlined accessibility and greater mechanical depth, ensuring players have both smoother progression and more rewarding gameplay. For Exiles preparing for the long grind ahead, 0.3.1 will reshape how you approach crafting, mapping, and endgame optimization.
