The War Within Story Recap: Patch 11.1 – All You Need to Know!

INTRODUCTION
Hello everyone and welcome to another InstantCarry blog post! As Patch 11.1 and Undermine rapidly approach, it’s time to reflect on the story leading up to this pivotal moment in The War Within. Let’s take a deep dive into the key events that have shaped the ongoing narrative and set the stage for the next chapter!
Prelude: The Dark Heart
The story begins well before The War Within, during the Dragonflight expansion. The battle against the Primal Incarnates introduced a significant new threat in the form of Iridikron, who uncovered a dangerous artifact known as the Dark Heart on the Forbidden Reach. Originally crafted by Deathwing, the artifact was an early prototype for the Dragon Soul, but its purpose remained unknown at the time.
Iridikron’s manipulation of the Dark Heart came to a head when he used it to siphon the void essence from the corpse of Galakrond during the Dawn of the Infinite dungeon. Our initial attempt to thwart him and destroy the Dark Heart succeeded, but the timeline was altered when Nozdormu was corrupted into Murozond. Chromie decided to reverse time, allowing Iridikron to escape with the proto-dragon’s essence—just as we glimpsed the mysterious Harbinger who appeared to be aiding him.
In the aftermath of Amirdrassil’s birth, strange visions known as the Radiant Song began to spread across Azeroth. With whispers of harmony, these visions called adventurers to investigate the source. Khadgar summoned us to Dalaran to team up with Alleria Windrunner, and their journey took them to Telogrus, the void elves’ hub, and the resting place of Galakrond. There, we discovered the true purpose of the Dark Heart—to absorb magic and convert it into shadow energy.
However, before we could fully understand its impact, Alleria sensed an attack on Ulduar, where Void Ethereals were assaulting the Titan facility. As we ventured deeper, the Harbinger’s presence became more apparent, and soon after, Alleria found herself facing a corrupted vision of her husband, Turalyon, which hindered her resolve. It was then revealed that the Harbinger was none other than Xal’atath, the void entity once imprisoned within a dagger wielded by Shadow Priests during Legion.
Locus-Walker, Alleria’s ethereal mentor, revealed that the Radiant Song had been heard on the ethereal homeworld of K’aresh before it was consumed by the Void Lord Dimensius. To prevent Azeroth from meeting the same fate, Locus-Walker urged Alleria to embrace her connection to the Void and let go of her fears regarding her loved ones. Unsure of this path, Alleria instead returned to Dalaran to regroup with Khadgar.
The War Within: Unraveling Mysteries
Once back in Dalaran, Khadgar and Jaina Proudmoore convened to investigate the Radiant Song. However, Magni Bronzebeard, the Speaker of Azeroth, had not heard from the planet since the events of Battle for Azeroth. Despite this, Magni assisted us in communing with Azeroth, resulting in a disturbing vision of Khaz Algar, the Titanforged lands, consumed by smoke and fire.
Our journey then led us to the Isle of Dorn, where the Earthen lived in hiding. As we arrived, however, Dalaran was attacked by the Nerubians, led by a new leader named Zirix. The battle forced the evacuation of the city, and Khadgar stayed behind to confront the source of the threat in the Violet Citadel. Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain as Xal’atath absorbed Dalaran’s arcane energy and destroyed the floating city.
The Earthen and the Legacy of Khaz Algar
We found ourselves in the ruins of Dalaran on the Isle of Dorn, where we began aiding the local Earthen and their leader, Baelgrim. After repairing some damage in their city of Dornogal, we were introduced to the Unbound Earthen, led by Adelgonn, who had renounced the Titans’ Edicts. As conflict with the Nerubians escalated, Baelgrim made a sacrifice to protect the Earthen, giving his life to defeat Zirix.
With the Coreway repaired, the Earthen united in their struggle, and a new chapter began. The Ringing Deeps came under attack by corrupted Earthen known as Skardyn, and we began to uncover more about the mysterious High Speaker Eirich, who had allied with Xal’atath. Eventually, we learned that Eirich had corrupted the Awakening Machine, causing irreversible damage to the Earthen.
The Ringing Deeps and the Awakening Machine
In the wake of the ongoing conflict, Brinthe, the new High Speaker of Dornogal, rallied the Earthen and the Machine Speakers of the Ringing Deeps to confront the corruption. The true extent of the corruption was revealed when we learned that Eirich had collaborated with Xal’atath to awaken the Earthen from stasis, transforming them into Skardyn.
A final confrontation in the Stonevault led to the awakening of a new Earthen leader, as Magni sacrificed his newfound powers to cleanse the corruption, becoming once again a flesh-and-blood dwarf. The Earthen were finally freed from their programming, ready to defend Azeroth against the Nerubian threat.
Anduin and the Arathi in Hallowfall
The narrative shifted to the story of Anduin Wrynn, the former King of Stormwind, who sought redemption after his experiences with the Jailer in Shadowlands. While traveling through Hallowfall, Anduin encountered the Arathi, a half-elven civilization led by General Steelstrike and their sacred flame, Beledar.
When the Nerubians launched an attack on Hallowfall, Alleria joined forces with Anduin to confront the threat. However, darkness began to engulf the land as Beledar shifted to shadow, and the Arathi’s faith in the Light was tested. Despite the chaos, Anduin and Faerin, a Lamplighter of the Arathi, restored Beledar’s light through their faith, although Anduin still struggled with his connection to the Light.
The Nerubians and the Fall of Azj-Kahet
The pursuit of Anduin led to Azj-Kahet, where the Nerubians were led by Queen Ansurek, who sought to use void powers to elevate her people. With the help of the Weaver, a Nerubian leader, we learned of Ansurek’s plot and joined forces with the Nerubians in rebellion against her tyranny.
Despite Alleria’s desire for vengeance, the conflict culminated in the defeat of Queen Ansurek, revealing Xal’atath’s manipulations and uncovering the true extent of her plans. We were left to confront the lingering threat of the Void as we prepared for the next chapter.
Archaedas and the Archives: The Truth Behind Azeroth’s Worldsoul
In Khaz Algar, we learned disturbing truths from Archaedas, the Keeper of the Earthen. Through the Titan Discs, Archaedas revealed that Azeroth might not be a Titan at all but a Worldsoul with immense potential to be shaped by any cosmic force. The Earthen were created by the Titans to maintain Azeroth’s core, but over time, they became corrupted and began to rebel.
The Earthen’s memories were reset periodically, preventing them from realizing their true purpose and the rebellion of the thraegar. With Brinthe now leading the Earthen, the question of the Titans’ true intentions for Azeroth’s Worldsoul remains unanswered.
Lingering Shadows and the Return of Orweyna
With the mystery of the Radiant Song still unresolved, Alleria’s connection to the Void continued to trouble her. Her pursuit of vengeance against Xal’atath led her to encounter Orweyna, a Haranir, who guided us through Azj-Kahet and revealed the true threat of the Nerubians and their alliance with the Void.
As we fought to liberate the Nerubians from Ansurek’s rule, Alleria learned valuable lessons about embracing both the Light and the Void. Meanwhile, Orweyna’s path led her to make difficult choices, abandoning her customs to join our cause in the battle against Xal’atath.
What’s Next with Patch 11.1?
With the impending release of Undermine, the next phase of The War Within beckons. The battle against Xal’atath, the Radiant Song, and the Nerubians is far from over.
