WoW Season of Discovery Phase 5: Release Date, Raids, Runes and Much More!

INTRODUCTION
Hello everyone and welcome to another InstantCarry blog post! This time around we’ll be focusing on the newest Phase for Season of Discovery, SoD Phase 5.
Announced early in September and fully revealed on September 19, 2024, World of Warcraft: Season of Discovery (SoD) Phase 5 is about to unfold, bringing fresh challenges for max-level players. Following Phase 4’s exciting level cap increase and the iconic Molten Core, Phase 5 introduces new endgame content, including two revamped raids, a new world boss, and various PvP updates. While this phase doesn’t raise the level cap, it certainly delivers a robust set of features, perfect for players eager to explore WoW’s evolving endgame content.
Without further ado, lets get into it!
WoW SoD Phase 5 Release Date – Official
Since it’s inception Season of Discovery has been shouldering a lot of changes and bringing to the table a mix of old and new features. With the SoD Phase 5 BETA release on the 30th of August, we waited a bit less than a month for the actual Phase to come to live servers. The official Season of Discovery (SoD) Phase 5 Release Date is set for the 26th of September, 2024.
Two New Raids & A World Boss: Blackwing Lair, Zul’Gurub & Thunderaan

The biggest highlight of Phase 5 is undoubtedly the introduction of two classic raids with a modern twist: Blackwing Lair (BWL) and Zul’Gurub (ZG). Both raids have been revamped to align with SoD’s unique mechanics and gear progression.
- Blackwing Lair brings an updated boss mechanic system, similar to Molten Core’s Heat System, which means players will face increasingly difficult challenges depending on the number of additional mechanics they choose to engage. The iconic battle against Nefarian will feel fresh with this enhanced difficulty, making BWL a must-raid for SoD veterans.
- Zul’Gurub features a redesigned Hakkar boss fight, with new mechanics and a more dynamic Edge of Madness section, giving players a choice over which bosses they take on. These changes keep the raid exciting for both new and returning players.
New World Boss: Thunderaan, the Prince of Air

In addition, players will face a new World Boss: Thunderaan, the Prince of Air. This encounter is designed for groups of 20 players but allows up to 40 participants for those who want to breeze through the challenge. While not tied to the Thunderfury questline, Thunderaan drops pre-BiS gear for every class, making it a high-priority target for players gearing up for the endgame. Plus, there’s a new SoD version of Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker, with updated stats for SoD content, adding even more incentive to tackle this powerful world boss.
New Runes & Easier Rune Acquisition
Phase 5 continues the tradition of adding new Runesfor players to experiment with. In SoD Phase 4, Ring Runes were introduced, granting bonuses that were useful across all characters regardless of their race. Phase 5 builds on this by introducing new Utility Runes that cater to various playstyles and specs.
- For healers, two new Ring Runes have been datamined: one significantly boosts Mana regeneration, while the other increases Healing output.
- New Runes will be obtainable through endgame Phase 5 content, giving players further opportunities to customize their characters’ abilities.
Moreover, a brand-new Rune Currency is being introduced. Players will be able to acquire bind-on-account Rune tokens from Pix Xizzix in Booty Bay and then trade them with vendors in capital cities. These tokens will grant access to Runes that were previously difficult to obtain, such as those from the Dark Rider questline, the Wild Gods vendor, and the Ley Lines questline. This system makes catching up on Runes much easier for both new and veteran players.
Revamped Tier 1.5 & Tier 2 Armor Sets
Alongside new Raids and World Bosses, Phase 5 introduces updated Tier 1.5 and Tier 2 gear sets. These sets can be acquired from Zul’Gurub and Blackwing Lair, respectively.
- Tier 2 armor drops in BWL, and Tier 1.5 comes from ZG. Both sets have been modified to include multiple variations for different specializations and playstyles, offering more diversity and depth for gearing options.
- Players can also get a head start on Phase 5 by picking up Tier 2 Bracers from Pix Xizzix on launch day, allowing them to begin gearing up even before entering BWL or ZG.
PvP Battleground Updates in SoD Phase 5: Warsong Gulch & Arathi Basin
PvP enthusiasts have long complained about the lack of variety in Battlegrounds, with Alterac Valley dominating Phase 4 due to its superior honor-per-hour gains. Phase 5 aims to fix this by improving the Honor rewards for Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin, giving players more reasons to queue for these classic PvP experiences.
Additionally, the PvP Rank Cap is being raised to 10 and beyond, allowing players to work their way toward Rank 14, the pinnacle of WoW’s original honor system. PvP players now have a clearer and more rewarding path to climb the honor ranks while enjoying a more diverse selection of Battlegrounds.
Quality of Life Improvements & Encouragement to Start Alts
Phase 5 also introduces various quality-of-life updates to make the leveling and gearing experience more streamlined. These changes are expected to encourage players to create Alts and explore different character builds, as gear acquisition becomes more flexible and accessible, and there are more options for customizing playstyles through the new Runes and Tier gear variations.
CONCLUSION
While Phase 5 may seem lighter in content compared to previous updates that introduced level cap increases, it offers plenty of new challenges for players who are hungry for Raid progression, PvP improvements, and better gear customization. With two revamped Raids, a challenging new World Boss, and a host of other improvements, Phase 5 is poised to deliver more exciting endgame content for both casual and hardcore players alike. Keep an eye out for more surprises, as Blizzard has hinted at even more content in the coming weeks, including possible new 5-man dungeons and other endgame secrets!
