Understanding the Zod Rune
The Zod Rune sits at the top of the rune hierarchy in Diablo 2 Resurrected — the 33rd and final rune in the game. While runes can technically be combined upward through Horadric Cube recipes from the lowest runes, reaching a single Zod through transmutation alone would require 14,281,868,906,496 El Runes alongside millions of gems across dozens of recipe steps — an astronomical number that makes self-farming essentially impossible. In practice, Zod Runes only enter the game through direct drops from level 81+ enemies in Act 5 Hell difficulty, where any given rune drop has approximately a 1 in 5,171 chance of being a Zod. Socketing a Zod Rune raises an item’s level requirement to 69 unless the item’s requirement was already higher.
Why the Zod Rune Matters for Ethereal Items
Ethereal items in Diablo 2 Resurrected have significantly boosted base stats — higher damage for weapons and higher defense for armor — but lose durability permanently with use and cannot be repaired normally. A Zod Rune socketed into an ethereal item removes this limitation entirely, making the item indestructible and allowing you to permanently benefit from its enhanced stats. This combination of Zod and ethereal is the defining endgame investment for the Breath of the Dying runeword in a 6-socket ethereal weapon — widely regarded as one of the strongest weapon runewords in the entire game.
