Ancients’ Oath is a Unique Two-Handed Axe built around the Barbarian’s Steel Grasp skill, and it changes the skill from a single pull into a real crowd control and damage tool. Normally Steel Grasp launches three chains to drag enemies toward you, but with this axe equipped you get two additional chains, meaning you’re pulling in more enemies at once with the same cast. On top of that, every enemy hit by Steel Grasp takes noticeably more damage from you for the next 5 seconds, so the pull isn’t just about positioning, it’s setting up a damage window right after. Combined with a big bonus to Damage to Close Enemies, extra ranks in Steel Grasp itself, Cooldown Reduction, and a solid Strength boost, Ancients’ Oath is built for Barbarians who want to gather enemies into melee range and then punish them hard once they’re there. Ancients’ Oath drops from The Beast in the Ice and can also be target farmed from Andariel, with additional chances from Nightmare Dungeons, World Events, and general loot. Ancients’ Oath Mechanics Explained
Steel Grasp on its own is already a useful skill for gathering scattered enemies into one spot, but Ancients’ Oath makes that gathering more aggressive and more rewarding. Going from three chains to five means a single cast reaches further and grabs more targets, which matters a lot in open areas or against spread-out packs where a standard Steel Grasp might only catch part of the group. More chains also means more individual enemies receiving the damage bonus at once, rather than just one or two.
That damage bonus is really the second half of what makes this axe work. Pulling enemies close is only half the value if you’re not also hitting them harder once they’re there, and the 40-60% increased damage window on every enemy Steel Grasp connects with turns the pull into a setup for your next few seconds of melee damage. Since the window lasts 5 full seconds, there’s enough time to follow up with your main damage skills before it expires, rather than needing to land everything instantly.
The supporting stats reinforce this same loop. Damage to Close Enemies scales naturally with a build that’s constantly pulling enemies into melee range, Cooldown Reduction means you’re not waiting as long between Steel Grasp casts to repeat the pull-and-punish cycle, and the extra Steel Grasp ranks make the skill itself stronger on top of everything the Unique Effect adds. Everything on Ancients’ Oath points toward the same playstyle: pull enemies in, then make them pay for being there.
