Azurewrath is a Unique One-Handed Sword usable by every class in Diablo 4, carrying its iconic Diablo franchise legacy into Lord of Hatred with a completely reworked mechanic. When a Frozen enemy’s Freeze expires, they explode for 100–120% of all the damage dealt to them while they were Frozen. The sword turns Freeze into a damage accumulator — every hit you land on a Frozen enemy is being stored up, and then paid out all at once the moment the Freeze ends. The more damage you can pile onto a Frozen target before the Freeze breaks, the larger that final explosion becomes. Because affixes are randomized in Lord of Hatred, secondary stats will vary by roll, but the Unique Effect is always fixed. Azurewrath drops from Bartuc via Infernal Hordes and can also appear from the general unique pool across all boss encounters at Torment difficulty.

Azurewrath Mechanics Explained
Azurewrath’s current mechanic works differently from most damage-on-hit effects in Diablo 4. Rather than adding damage to each individual hit, it accumulates all the damage dealt to a Frozen enemy over the entire duration of the Freeze and pays it back as a single explosion when the Freeze breaks. At 100–120% of total accumulated damage, the explosion effectively doubles or more the total damage output of everything you put into that target during its Frozen window.
The practical implication is that the sword rewards builds that can both reliably apply Freeze and deal sustained damage during the Freeze window. A build that applies Freeze but only lands one or two hits before it breaks will see a modest explosion. A build that can stack multiple high-damage hits onto a Frozen target — through fast attack speed, multiple hits per animation, or damage-over-time effects that tick during the Freeze — will see the explosion scale dramatically because all of that accumulated damage gets returned at once.
This makes Azurewrath most effective on builds that have strong Freeze application paired with sustained damage output during the Freeze window. Cold-themed builds that already invest in Freeze duration extend that window and allow more damage to accumulate before the detonation triggers. Builds that rely on a single large hit to break Freeze themselves are less well-suited since they end the accumulation window with that hit rather than letting it run to expiry.
The fact that it works on all classes also makes it a flexible option for any build that interacts with Freeze through skills, aspects, or procs — not just dedicated Cold builds.
