Fields of Crimson is a Unique Two-Handed Sword built specifically for Barbarians running Rupture and Bleed-focused builds. The current effect changes how Rupture works in a meaningful way: when Rupture’s rip hits an enemy, it instantly deals 38–50% of all the Bleeding damage that enemy has accumulated, then removes the rest. This turns Rupture from a skill that slowly ticks down Bleed stacks into one that detonates them for a burst of immediate damage, which suits any build that’s stacking large amounts of Bleeding through Rend, passive nodes, or other sources. The sword also rolls consistent Bleed-supporting affixes including Damage Over Time and Rupture Cooldown Reduction, giving the build both damage and frequency of use in one weapon slot. Fields of Crimson drops from Echo of Varshan and The Beast in the Ice, and can also be found from general open-world loot and Nightmare Dungeons. Fields of Crimson Mechanics Explained
Fields of Crimson’s current effect fundamentally changes the damage pattern of Rupture rather than adding an extra mechanic on top of it. Before the Lord of Hatred update, the sword created a blood pool that dealt ongoing Bleed damage and amplified incoming damage for enemies standing inside it. The current version works differently: instead of the pool, Rupture’s rip now acts as an instant detonator for all accumulated Bleeding damage on the target, dealing 38–50% of the total Bleed stack immediately and wiping the rest.
What this means in practice depends entirely on how much Bleeding damage has been built up on the enemy before Rupture fires. A Barbarian running Rend, passive Bleed nodes, and other Bleed sources can stack a significant amount of Bleed damage on a target over several seconds, and Fields of Crimson then converts a large portion of that slow-ticking total into a single instant hit when Rupture lands. The higher the Bleed stack, the bigger the detonation.
The Rupture Cooldown Reduction affix on the sword pairs naturally with this, since more frequent Rupture casts mean more opportunities to detonate Bleed stacks rather than letting them tick down slowly on their own. This makes Fields of Crimson most effective in builds that are actively maintaining high Bleed stacks through other skills between Rupture casts, rather than builds where Rupture itself is the primary Bleed source.
