Greaves of the Empty Tomb are Unique boots built for Necromancers running a Sever-focused build, and they add a layer of damage to the skill that isn’t there by default. Whenever you cast Sever, it leaves behind Desecrated Ground that keeps dealing Shadow damage to anything standing in it for a couple of seconds after the initial hit lands. On top of that, the boots boost your Sever projectile size and give you a chance for those projectiles to cast twice, so a single cast can end up covering more ground and hitting harder than it normally would. Greaves of the Empty Tomb Mechanics Explained
Sever is already a strong skill on its own, but Greaves of the Empty Tomb changes what happens after the initial hit. Normally, once a Sever projectile passes through an enemy, the damage is done and you move on. With these boots equipped, that same projectile leaves Desecrated Ground behind it, which keeps ticking Shadow damage on anything standing in that area for a couple of seconds. In practice, this means you’re not just hitting enemies once and moving past them — you’re leaving a trail of damage that punishes enemies for standing still or walking through where you’ve already been.
The projectile size increase and the chance to cast twice work together to make that trail bigger and more frequent. A larger Sever projectile covers more ground per cast, so the Desecrated Ground it leaves behind ends up stretching across a wider area. When a projectile casts twice, you’re effectively doubling how much of that lingering damage zone you’re creating with a single button press. For builds that are already moving through packs of enemies quickly, this turns Sever from a single-target-feeling skill into something closer to a moving area denial tool.
The extra ranks in Reaper’s Pursuit and the Movement Speed it provides aren’t just a quality-of-life bonus here — they directly support the playstyle the boots are built around. Moving faster means you’re laying down more Desecrated Ground across a wider area in the same amount of time, and the Damage Reduction against enemies affected by your Shadow DoT effects means you can comfortably stay near the zones you’ve created instead of needing to retreat from them. Everything on this item points toward the same idea: cast Sever, keep moving, and let the ground behind you do the rest of the work.
