What Is Howl from Below and Why Buy It
Howl from Below addresses one of the core limitations of Corpse Explosion as a skill — it requires enemies to stand near a corpse to take full damage. In practice, enemies in Diablo 4 move constantly, especially during boss fights and Elite encounters where targets reposition frequently. Standard Corpse Explosion punishes this by dealing reduced damage when enemies move away from the detonation zone. Howl from Below eliminates this problem entirely by replacing the static explosion with a Volatile Skeleton that runs toward the nearest enemy before detonating. The result is a version of Corpse Explosion that effectively follows the target, making the skill reliable against mobile enemies for the first time.
The 30–50% increased damage on top of this behaviour change makes Howl from Below a meaningful damage upgrade on its own, separate from the mobility benefit. Corpse Explosion builds running these gloves deal noticeably more damage per cast even in situations where standard Corpse Explosion would have connected cleanly, because the base damage multiplier applies regardless of whether the targeting improvement was needed.
The Fear and Slow on each explosion adds a crowd control layer that compounds with Corpse Explosion’s natural AoE. Each Volatile Skeleton detonation Fears and Slows nearby enemies for up to 0.6 seconds, which in rapid-fire Corpse Explosion builds creates overlapping Fear windows that keep large groups partially controlled throughout a fight. The Corpse Attack Speed affix accelerates how quickly you can consume corpses, which directly increases the frequency of Volatile Skeleton spawns and therefore the rate of both damage and crowd control application.
Peace of the Black Shroud charm set pairs well with Howl from Below for Darkness-focused Necromancer builds that want to combine Corpse Explosion output with sustained Darkness Skill damage-over-time stacking — the mobile Volatile Skeleton helps reach targets that are spread by the charm set’s Fear effects.
