Penitent Greaves are Unique Boots usable by every class in Diablo 4, and in Lord of Hatred they received a meaningful upgrade over their previous version. You are permanently Unhindered while wearing them, meaning you can move through enemies without being slowed or blocked at any time — no cooldown, no activation required. The boots also leave a trail of frost behind you as you move, continuously Chilling any enemy that walks through it. On top of that, every Chill effect you apply to an enemy causes them to take 10–15% increased damage from you for the duration. This makes the boots both a mobility and a damage tool simultaneously — the frost trail keeps enemies Chilled, and those Chilled enemies are taking more damage from every source in your build. Because affixes are randomized in Lord of Hatred, secondary stats will vary by roll, but the Unique Effect is always fixed. Penitent Greaves drop from Grigoire and Lord Zir and can also be found from Nightmare Dungeons, World Events, and general open-world loot.

Penitent Greaves Mechanics Explained
The two halves of Penitent Greaves’ Unique Effect work together in a natural loop. As you move through a fight, the frost trail left behind Chills any enemy that steps through it without any skill cast required — it’s passive and constant. Once those enemies are Chilled, the second part of the effect applies: they take 10–15% increased damage from every source you have. That bonus applies to skills, procs, damage over time, and any other damage you deal while the Chill is active, not just a specific skill or damage type.
The permanent Unhindered buff added in Lord of Hatred is the quality-of-life layer that makes the boots genuinely usable in dense combat. Unhindered lets you pass through enemies as if they weren’t there, which means you can move freely to position the frost trail exactly where you want it, reposition behind enemy groups to keep them walking through it, and avoid getting pinned by large packs in tight spaces. Previously, Unhindered was typically a temporary effect tied to skills or Aspects. Having it permanently from a boot slot frees up those other sources for different build investments.
For Cold-focused builds, the Chill damage bonus stacks naturally with other Cold debuff interactions, making the boots particularly strong when paired with skills that already apply Chill or Freeze through their own effects. For builds without dedicated Cold skills, the frost trail alone provides enough Chill application to keep the damage bonus consistently active on any enemy walking near you.
