Eonyr’s Thunder is an endgame-exclusive Lineage Support Gem in Path of Exile 2 that replaces Shock entirely with a more lethal Lightning ailment system. Any skill it supports can no longer inflict Shock — but its Lightning damage now contributes to Electrocute buildup instead. When an Electrocuted enemy is slain by a supported skill, it triggers Voltaic Fulmination — an instant Lightning explosion with a 1.5–2.1 metre radius that deals 5–14% of the corpse’s maximum Life as Lightning damage to surrounding enemies. Voltaic Fulmination has a 0.30–0.20 second cooldown with 5 charges, meaning rapid sequential Electrocuted kills generate a continuous chain of explosions across a pack before the cooldown refreshes. The inscription frames Eonyr’s identity through the lens of his flock — the Great Wyvern granted her passage, and Eonyr and his flock soar the winds between worlds, their hunting calls heard as the roar of the storm. The gem translates this directly: the storm strikes, Electrocutes, and when the prey falls the thunder cracks outward through everything nearby. For Lightning builds that want consistent pack clearing through on-death explosions and are willing to invest in Electrocute buildup rather than Shock scaling, Eonyr’s Thunder converts every Electrocuted kill into an AoE Lightning detonation that chains through dense groups independently of the player’s next action. Eonyr’s Thunder is built around a deliberate trade between two Lightning ailment systems. Shock is Path of Exile 2’s standard Lightning debuff — it increases damage taken by the shocked target by a percentage, functioning as a universal damage amplifier that benefits every hit against the shocked enemy. Electrocute is the heavier, rarer Lightning ailment — it requires higher buildup to apply but creates the condition for Voltaic Fulmination’s on-death explosion. Eonyr’s Thunder disables Shock entirely and redirects all Lightning damage contribution toward Electrocute buildup — the trade being that individual hits no longer increase target damage through Shock, but kills of Electrocuted targets now generate AoE Lightning explosions that can chain through entire packs independently.
The Voltaic Fulmination explosion scaling is what determines how impactful this trade becomes. At 5–14% of the corpse’s maximum Life dealt as Lightning damage, the explosion’s raw output scales with enemy health rather than the player’s damage stats — meaning the gem becomes proportionally stronger in content where enemies have larger health pools, since the explosion deals a fixed percentage of whatever that pool is. In high-tier maps where individual enemies have substantial life pools, an Electrocuted kill generates an explosion that can exceed the base damage of many direct skill hits against nearby targets. The 5-charge cooldown at 0.20–0.30 seconds means rapid-kill scenarios sustain nearly continuous explosion output throughout dense encounters.
The Electrocute buildup requirement shapes which skills pair most effectively with the gem. Skills that deal high-frequency Lightning hits accumulate Electrocute buildup faster than low-frequency high-damage skills — meaning attack-speed-oriented Lightning builds and multi-hit spells charge Electrocute faster per second than slow heavy-hitting skills. Builds prioritising Lightning Damage, Cast or Attack Speed, and Critical Strike Chance to accelerate Electrocute application maximise how consistently Voltaic Fulmination fires throughout combat.
