Old Hillsbrad Foothills, also known as Escape from Durnholde, is one of the most important dungeons in TBC Classic and a mandatory progression step for both Fresh and Anniversary realms. Located inside the Caverns of Time in Tanaris, this dungeon allows players to witness Thrall’s legendary escape while unlocking critical attunements, reputation, and pre-raid gear.

About TBC Old Hillsbrad Foothills
Old Hillsbrad Foothills is built around an escort sequence rather than a typical series of standalone boss fights, and that structure is what makes it stand apart from most other TBC Classic dungeons. The group follows Thrall as he fights his way through Durnholde Keep, with waves of guards and named enemies appearing along a fixed route. Because Thrall is an NPC the group has to actively protect rather than control directly, the entire dungeon hinges on managing incoming damage and crowd control well enough that he survives the trip from start to finish.
This escort format means positioning and pulling discipline matter more here than in most dungeons at the same level range. Pulling too many enemies at once, or letting adds reach Thrall unchecked, can put the escort in danger even if the group itself is in no real risk of wiping. Because there’s no way to pause the escort once it begins, a group that mismanages even one or two pulls partway through can end up losing Thrall and having to restart the whole sequence, which is part of why undergeared or uncoordinated pickup groups often struggle here more than the dungeon’s difficulty rating suggests.
Beyond the escort itself, Old Hillsbrad ties directly into Keepers of Time reputation and the broader Caverns of Time attunement chain that leads into Karazhan. This makes it one of the dungeons nearly every fresh Level 70 character needs to clear at some point, regardless of class or role, since the attunement and reputation gains aren’t optional for players aiming at the standard raid progression path.
