Idol of the Sycophant is a Unique Augment in Path of Exile 2 built around a high-risk high-reward damage conversion trade. Socketed into a Martial Weapon, Wand, or Staff it applies two effects simultaneously: -20% to all Elemental Resistances on the character, and 20% of all Damage dealt is gained as extra Damage of a random Element on every hit. Socketed into a Sceptre the same trade applies to Companions in your Presence instead — Companions lose 20% to all Elemental Resistances while gaining 20% of their Damage as extra random Elemental Damage. The Bonded modifier extends the trade into Chaos: Martial Weapon, Wand, and Staff applications additionally impose -20% to Chaos Resistance and gain 20% of Damage as extra Chaos Damage on top of the base effect. Sceptre Bonded causes all Allies in Presence to gain 20% of Damage as extra Chaos Damage while Companions in Presence suffer -20% Chaos Resistance simultaneously. The trade-off structure is consistent across every application — more damage types added, more resistance coverage sacrificed — making Idol of the Sycophant a damage-maximising Augment that requires investment in resistance compensation elsewhere in the build. As with all Idols, socketing is permanent and cannot be undone, only replaced. Limited to 1 per character and requires Level 50. About PoE 2 Idol of the Sycophant
Idol of the Sycophant follows a different design philosophy from the other Idols in this series — rather than enhancing existing mechanics through conditional bonuses or charge system interactions, it imposes a direct trade between defensive coverage and offensive output. Every application reduces resistance on the affected entity while adding a new damage type conversion — the character or Companion gains more total damage through the extra elemental addition but becomes more vulnerable to the element categories that are being penalised.
The random Element on the main effect is the variable that requires build consideration. The extra Damage type changes between Fire, Cold, and Lightning randomly — builds that scale a specific element benefit most when the random roll aligns with their primary damage type, while builds that scale all elemental damage equally benefit consistently regardless of which element the roll produces. The resistance penalty applies to all three elemental types simultaneously, meaning the vulnerability is spread across every elemental source rather than concentrated on one.
The Bonded Chaos extension doubles the trade surface. Adding -20% Chaos Resistance and 20% extra Chaos Damage on top of the base effect means the Bonded state sacrifices resistance coverage across all four damage categories — Physical Elemental, Fire, Cold, Lightning, and Chaos — while gaining additional damage from two simultaneous extra damage sources. For builds with strong resistance coverage through gear and passive tree investment that can comfortably absorb the combined penalties, the Bonded state delivers one of the largest total damage additions available from a single Augment socket at the cost of requiring substantial resistance compensation in the remainder of the build.
