Forgotten Warden is a Unique Primal Markings Body Armour in Path of Exile 2 built around a defensive system that ties Deflection Rating, Energy Shield, and Companion durability together into a single interconnected loop. It adds +70–100 Deflection Rating per 50 missing Energy Shield — meaning the lower your current Energy Shield, the higher your Deflection Rating becomes, converting Energy Shield depletion into a growing physical interception layer rather than simply a damage reduction loss. The armour also provides 200–300% increased Evasion and Energy Shield, +20–30 Dexterity, and Companions have 30–50% increased maximum Life — making every Companion tankier simultaneously. The defining offensive-defensive interaction is 10–15% of damage from Deflected Hits being taken from a damageable Companion’s Life before you — when a hit is Deflected, a portion of the blocked damage is redirected to your Companion rather than reaching your own life pool. The inscription grounds the item in the Draíocht lore: a gift lost in Darkness, bronze humming, cloth sighing, living pieces yearning to exist. For Ranger or Mercenary builds that maintain active Companions and want to convert Deflection into a shared damage mitigation system rather than a personal survival tool, Forgotten Warden makes every successful Deflect a collaborative event between the character and their Companion. Forgotten Warden is built around an inverse relationship between two defensive systems — Energy Shield and Deflection Rating — that normally operate independently. Energy Shield absorbs damage before Life, providing a buffer that depletes as combat continues. Deflection Rating intercepts physical hits and negates them entirely when a Deflect fires. Forgotten Warden connects these systems by making Deflection Rating scale inversely with current Energy Shield — the more Energy Shield has been consumed, the higher Deflection Rating climbs, creating a dynamic where sustained combat that depletes the shield layer simultaneously strengthens the physical interception layer as compensation.
The Companion damage redirect is the mechanic that makes this defensive layering particularly impactful rather than simply interesting. When a Deflect fires and would normally negate the hit entirely, Forgotten Warden instead redirects 10–15% of that hit’s damage to a damageable Companion’s Life before it reaches the player. The Companion absorbs a portion of Deflected damage while the remaining percentage is still mitigated by the Deflect — creating a scenario where the Companion is actively participating in the player’s survival rather than simply fighting independently alongside them.
The 30–50% increased Companion maximum Life directly scales how much Deflected damage the Companion can absorb before becoming a survivability concern itself. A Companion with 50% more maximum Life takes each Deflect redirect with more headroom before its own life pool becomes critically low — meaning both the frequency of Deflects (through Deflection Rating scaling from Energy Shield depletion) and the Companion’s capacity to absorb the redirected damage (through the increased Life) compound in the same direction simultaneously.
The Level 16 Spirit Vessel skill grant pairs thematically with the armour’s Companion-centred identity — Spirit Vessel is a Companion interaction skill that manages the soul energy tying Companion and player together, reinforcing the Draíocht lore of living pieces yearning to exist that the inscription evokes.
