The Head of the King is a Map Fragment that drops from defeating the King in the Mists, the boss accessed through the Ritual endgame mechanic in Path of Exile 2’s Return of the Ancients expansion. Once you have it, you bring it to Aoife at Caer Tarth, attach it to the Effigy, and unlock the Rite of the Nameless — a continuous five-map Ritual chain where each completed map adds its boss to the final encounter. Successfully finishing all five maps rewards the Call of the Shadows, the key used to summon and fight the Bodach, which is the true Ritual Pinnacle Boss.
Reaching the King in the Mists in the first place requires farming Ritual encounters across your Atlas until the “An Audience with the King” fragment drops from Ritual Tribute rewards — an RNG-gated process that cannot be directly targeted and which can take a significant number of Ritual maps before the fragment appears. Only then can you fight the King, earn the Head of the King, and begin the next stage of the Ritual questline chain.

About the Head of the King Fragment
The Head of the King sits at the midpoint of the Ritual endgame chain in Return of the Ancients, and understanding where it fits makes the whole progression structure clearer. The Ritual questline moves in distinct stages: standard Ritual maps to earn Tribute, Tribute spending and overflow sacrifice to fill the Audience bar, An Audience with the King to fight the King in the Mists, the Head of the King drop which unlocks the next stage, the Rite of the Nameless five-map chain, and finally the Bodach fight via Call of the Shadows at Caer Tarth. Each stage is a hard gate — you cannot skip to the Rite of the Nameless without first having the Head of the King, and you cannot fight the Bodach without completing the Rite.
The bottleneck most players encounter is getting the An Audience with the King fragment in the first place. Unlike most Pinnacle Boss access methods in PoE 2, this one is entirely RNG-gated through Ritual Tribute reward pools, with no direct farming method to guarantee when it appears. The Switchblade Gaming guide notes it explicitly: the King in the Mists is the only Pinnacle Boss whose invitation cannot be targeted. Players who want to push into the Rite of the Nameless and farm the Bodach for its exclusive drops are entirely dependent on this random drop appearing before they can move forward.
The Rite of the Nameless itself is also a meaningful investment once you have the Head of the King. It’s not a single fight — it’s a five-map continuous Ritual chain where monsters from each completed map carry forward and stack into the final encounter, meaning the difficulty compounds with each map. Completing all five without breaking the chain is the requirement for the Call of the Shadows reward, and failing before the fifth map resets your progress.
