Periphery is a Unique Heartwood Shortbow in Path of Exile 2 that does something no other bow in the game does — it converts all elemental damage from hits into magnitude and buildup contributions across every ailment simultaneously. About PoE 2 Periphery
Periphery’s unique effect is built around a single mechanical insight — that the threshold for applying an ailment and the magnitude of that ailment are separate concerns that can be addressed by different stat sources simultaneously. Normally a bow build specialising in Freeze stacks Cold damage, Freeze buildup investment, and Cold ailment magnitude. A build specialising in Shock stacks Lightning damage and Shock chance. Periphery removes the need to choose between these tracks by making every elemental hit contribute to all of them at once.
The bow’s affix spread reflects this multi-vector design directly. It adds substantial Fire, Cold, and Lightning damage simultaneously — 49–90 Fire, 38–70 Cold, 1–135 Lightning — providing the raw elemental output that feeds the ailment conversion. The 12% increased Attack Speed accelerates how frequently those hits land and how quickly ailments accumulate. The Level 17 Azmerian Swarms grant adds a skill that benefits from the bow’s elemental damage and fits thematically with the Wildwood lore the item draws from.
The Flammability contribution is the less immediately obvious element worth highlighting. Flammability is a curse that reduces enemy Fire Resistance — having Fire hit damage contribute to its magnitude means Periphery builds passively apply resistance reduction through normal attack rotations without dedicating a separate curse skill investment to the effect.
