Shackles of the Wretched occupies a unique position in Path of Exile 2’s itemisation — it is a low-level unique with a mechanic that enables some of the game’s most sophisticated build interactions at endgame. The curse reflection is not conditional or limited — every Curse inflicted outward by the character is simultaneously reflected back inward, making the self-curse state permanent and reliable as long as the character is inflicting Curses as part of their rotation.
The most prominent interaction in patch 0.5.0 is the Sierran Inheritance reverse Chill loop. Sierran Inheritance reverses the effect of Chill on the player, turning Action Speed reduction into Action Speed gain. Shackles of the Wretched provides the mechanism through which Chill applied to enemies reaches the player — by reflecting Curses including Cold-based Hexes back onto the character, the Chill that would normally only affect enemies instead lands on the Sierran Inheritance wearer and is immediately converted into an Action Speed buff. The 6-second Chill immunity window after the first Chill application requires careful management in this loop — the immunity window must be worked around rather than allowed to interrupt the reverse Chill uptime.
The infinite crossbow ammo interaction through Shard Scavenger represents a completely different axis of value for the same gloves. Shard Scavenger is a skill that converts self-applied debuffs into ammunition replenishment — the reflected Curses from Shackles of the Wretched feed this mechanic continuously as long as the character is cursing enemies, sustaining the ammunition pool over extended combat without requiring reloading downtime. Two entirely different endgame build archetypes benefit from the same core mechanic for entirely different reasons, which is why Shackles of the Wretched maintains high demand regardless of which meta builds are dominant in any given patch.
