Twisted Empyrean is a Unique Aberrant Sledge in Path of Exile 2 and the cornerstone weapon for Cold Mace builds. It converts 100% of Fire Damage dealt by Mace Skills into Cold Damage — turning every Fire-tagged Mace skill in the game into a Cold damage source without any additional conversion investment. For Warrior and Titan builds that use Fire Mace skills and want to convert entirely into Cold scaling without gear investment spread across multiple conversion sources, Twisted Empyrean handles the full 100% conversion from the weapon slot alone while simultaneously scaling Cold Damage from the Mana pool it builds. Twisted Empyrean is built around a specific design opportunity in Path of Exile 2’s Mace skill tree — the Fire Mace skill category. Maces have access to powerful Fire-tagged skills whose mechanics, scaling nodes, and support gem interactions are designed around Fire damage. Standard Cold Mace builds cannot access these skills without sacrificing their Cold scaling. Twisted Empyrean solves this by converting 100% of Fire Damage from Mace Skills into Cold Damage directly — meaning every Fire Mace skill is treated as a Cold skill for all damage calculation purposes after the conversion fires, allowing the build to access the full Fire Mace skill pool while scaling exclusively from Cold damage modifiers, Cold penetration, and Chill and Freeze ailment investment.
The Mana-scaled Cold Damage addition is the second system that makes Twisted Empyrean specifically interesting rather than simply a conversion piece. At 6–8% to 10–12% of maximum Mana added as flat Cold Damage per attack, the weapon treats the character’s Mana pool as a damage stat simultaneously with its resource function. The +300–400 maximum Mana on the weapon itself seeds this relationship — and every additional Mana investment through gear, passive tree, and Strength scaling (which grants Mana through Kalguuran mechanics) adds directly to the flat Cold Damage on every hit. The 10–20% of Damage taken from Mana before Life ties the defensive layer into the same Mana investment, meaning Mana is simultaneously a damage source and a health buffer.
Starborn Onslaught at Level 16 is the built-in skill that pairs with the weapon’s Cold conversion identity — a Kalguuran Mace skill that deals combined Physical and elemental damage in an area. With Twisted Empyrean’s Fire-to-Cold conversion active, any Fire component of Starborn Onslaught converts to Cold alongside all other Fire Mace skills in the rotation, keeping the entire damage profile unified under Cold scaling throughout combat.
