What are Runes or Rune Engravings in Season of Discovery?
In WoW Classic’s Season of Discovery, Runes serve as items that are slotted into gear, granting passive effects or unlocking new spells or abilities for the character. They are exclusive to this particular season and are not available in other iterations of the game. Blizzard has implemented the rune system as a means to explore new class fantasies and to address balancing issues by empowering weaker specs. Furthermore, some runes offer effects that enable classes to fulfill entirely new roles, expanding gameplay possibilities. For instance, a Warlocks and Rogue can become a Tank, Mages can be Healers etc.
Each rune is designed for a specific gear slot. Phase 1 of the Season of Discovery introduced runes for the Chest, Hands, and Legs slots. Phase 2 expands upon this by introducing runes for the Waist and Feet slots. Additional runes for other equipment slots are slated to be introduced in subsequent phases of the season.
Note: The notable features of runes is their flexibility. They can be swapped out at any time, provided your character is not in combat. You can expect to receive your first rune through a Quest from your Class trainer at level 2. As the Season of Discovery progresses through further phases, additional runes will be introduced, that will change the gameplay experience and providing everyone with more options for customization and specialization.
Why are Runes important to a Hunter?
Hunter Runes are important in SoD because of the effect that they have on the Class overall. We’ve known the Hunter to be mostly a Ranged Class, and this aspect of the Class is something that used to define it. However in SoD this is not the case, considering you can swap to being a melee Hunter and be like Rexxar. Hunters are well know to being at the top when it comes to Leveling and early on Raiding, especially in the beginning. Having the ability to get a pet to aggro off you, solo Quests that need Groups and to easily defeat any creature or mobs that you cross paths with.
However, with certain Runes that became available in Season of Discovery, the Hunter gameplay can change and you can choose to play without a pet, go into melee and be more like a Warrior, Enha Shaman and Rogue. So lets see which Hunter Runes are available in SoD Phase 2!
All Season of Discovery Phase 2 Hunter Class Runes
- Expose Weakness (Waist Rune) – Your melee and ranged criticals increase your attack power by 40% of your current Agility for 7 sec.
- Melee Specialist (Waist Rune) – Raptor Strike cooldown reduced to 3 sec and is now instant, Mongoose Bite cooldown removed, and Raptor Strike has a 30% chance on each attack not to trigger its cooldown.
- Steady Shot (Waist Rune) – A steady shot that causes 60% ranged weapon damage.
- Dual Wield Specialization (Feet Rune) – Increases the damage done by your offhand weapon by 50%, causes your Raptor Strike to strike with both weapons when you are dual-wielding, and Raptor Strike deals 30% increased damage when you are wielding two weapons of the same type.
Note: This will change from the 28th of February and Dual Wielding two Weapons of the same-type will no longer give 30% increased damage. - Invigoration (Feet Rune) – When your pet scores a critical hit with a special ability, you instantly regenerate 5% of your maximum mana.
- Trap Launcher (Feet Rune) – Your Traps can now be placed at any location within 35 yards, and can be placed while you are in combat. Additionally, your Fire-based and Frost-based traps now have separate shared cooldowns.

How to get the Cobra Strikes Rune for Hunter in SoD?
This Rune is obtained in the same way for both Alliance and Horde. A couple of steps for this one. The hardest step in obtaining the Rune of Cobra Strikes is actually finding the Goblin. Also, bear in mind that this is located in Hillsbrad Foothills, so you’ll need to be at least Level 20 to get this Rune. Here is how to get it:
- Go to Hillsbrad and find Zixil. He is a travelling Goblin Merchant that goes between Southshore and Tarren Mill and sells his wares with a robot companion, among other interesting items, he is selling Freshwater Snapper Bait – this is what we need.
- Once you got the Bait, go to the small Lake just south of Tarren Mill in Hillsbrad.
- You will find a small boat there that you should climb into.
- Once you’re on the boat, simply use the Freshwater Snapper Bait and wait for the Level 25 Elite Turtle Koartul to spawn.
Once you defeat him, you can loot the Rune of Cobra Strikes and get Engrave Chest – Cobra Strikes.
Note: Many times it may be frustrating not to find the Goblin because either the Alliance or Horde are keeping them in their town by constantly talking to him. Just don’t get frustrated try to find him some other time, or try to swap layers. As the Phase goes by, this should be easier with more people obtaining the rune and Leveling up.
How to get Kill Command Rune for Hunter in SoD?
The Rune of Kill Command is another one of the Hunter Runes that is obtained by both Horde and Alliance at the same place and with the same steps. Here is how to get it:
- First off, we head into Stonetalon Mountains.
- You will have to find Jixo Madrocket who is located just before you enter the Windshear Crag in Stonetalon at (61, 62). He should be walking around the hut.
- He will give you a Quest called ” Wild Wyvern Wrangling “.
- This Quest will require you to get a Gnarled Wand of Wild Magic and a Hypnotic Crystal.
How to get the Gnarled Wand of Wild Magic
In order to obtain the Gnarled Wand of Wild Magic, you have to get a Greater Magic Wand from the Auction House, or make it if you are an Enchanter. Combine it with the Wild Magic Essence that drops off of Foulweald Shaman or other Furbolgs in Ashenvale.
How to get the Hypnotic Crystal
This item will take you to the Wailing Caverns. So either get a group together, or simply be high enough level to solo the Dungeon. You will need to get to the very end of the Dungeon and defeat Mutanus the Devourer, the Final Boss of the Dungeon and he drops the Hypnotic Crystal.
- Now that we have both the Gnarled Wand of Wild Magic and a Hypnotic Crystal it’s time to go back to Jixo Madrocket.
- When you get to him, you will give him the items, and then he will give you a follow-up Quest called ” Wrangling a Wild Wyvern “.
- The Quest will be completed by watching Jixo tame a Young Pridewing Wyvern.
Once you’ve completed this, you will get the Rune of Kill Command which will allow you to Engrave Pants – Kill Command. Aside from this, you will get the Wyvern Taming Rod, which will allow you to get the Young Pridewings from Stonetalon as your pet. The Pridewings in Season of Discovery fall under the category of Winged Serpents, so they have the same abilities.
Note!!!: Be careful when you are turning in the first Quest ” Wild Wyvern Wrangling “, if Jixo is not standing next to the hut, but is instead already in the process of taming a Pridewing for someone else, you can risk to turn in the Quest and lose the items needed and not get the follow-up. So wait for him to be at the hut standing before you turn it in, so you don’t lose the items and waste precious time.
Note 2: In the case where you had the Quest ‘bug’, and lost the items, there is a potential solution:
- If you got the follow-up Quest, but nothing is happening.
- Try to abandon it.
- Relog.
- Then go back in after a couple of minutes.
With a bit of luck, this should reset the procedure and he will give you the follow-up Quest ” Wrangling a Wild Wyvern “, and you won’t have to get the items again.
How to get the Heart of the Lion Rune for Hunter in SoD?
Probably the simplest among the Hunter Runes and Rune Engravings to get is the Rune of Heart of the Lion. All you have to do is to defeat a level 25 Elite mob in the Wetlands.
- In the Thelgen Rock Cave in the Wetlands, you can find Carrodin. A 25 lvl Elite Owl which has a knockdown and doesn’t do much damage, so he should be easy to deal with on your own as long as you have your cooldowns and you pet. There are many spiders in the cave and Carrodin is found at the end of it.(47, 64)
Once you defeat him, you will be able to loot the Rune of Heart of the Lion and get the Engrave Chest – Heart of the Lion.
How to get the Lone Wolf Rune for Hunter in SoD?
From the start, you should know that this is one of the more ‘expensive’ Hunter Runes in SoD. In order to get the Rune of Lone Wolf in Season of Discovery, there are a few Quests that you have to finish. However, do not fret – in Phase 2 of SoD it’s quite easy to obtain this by simply purchasing the majority off of the Auction House, and killing some Elites in the Wetlands. Lets get into more detail on what you have to do to get this Rune.
- First off, you will have to go to Ratchet in the Barrens and find Grizzby (62, 39). He is located inside the Inn.
- The First Quest is more of a turn-in than an actual Quest, considering you can take the necessary items even before you go and talk to him. So best be prepared to bring:
- Hand in the quest to the following NPCs in your faction’s capital:
- 24x Fish Oil (purchased from the Auction House, and farmed by killing Murlocs or Naga)
- 20x Dark Iron Ordinance (farmed by killing Dark Iron Dwarf – ELITES*)
- 16x Shredder Turbocharger (going to the Winshear Crag with a Shredder Autosalvage Unit, that you have to use on the Venture Co. Light Shredder and have a chance at getting the Turbochargers. Alternatively, you may purchase these directly from the Auction House)
- After the turn-ins. Grizzby will give you a Quest ” Let Me Make You An Offer “(H) or ” Let Me Make You An Offer “(A).
- You will turn in these Quests in the Capital Cities of either Faction:
- (A) Master Wood in Old Town in Stormwind City (79.2, 47.6).
- (H) Zel’mak in The Valley of Honor in Orgrimmar (80.2, 29.6).
- After that, you will get another Quest which will bring you back to Grizzby in Ratchet:
- Once you’ve handed in this Quest, Grizzby will offer to sell you the Rune of Lone Wolf – for 3 Gold.
- Get the Gold, buy the Rune and you’ll get your Warbringer Rune which goes into the Chest slot.
Note: Bear in mind that you have to be Level 20 in order to begin the turn in Quests. If you can’t see it, your Character Level is too low.
How to get the Serpent Spread Rune for Hunter in SoD?
Another ‘easy’ pick-up among the Hunter Runes is definitely the Rune of Serpent Spread. By turning in Waylaid Supplies and Supply Shipments, you will be able to raise the Reputation with the Factions added in Season of Discovery to FRIENDLY! Once you’ve done that it’s only a matter of getting the necessary Gold to purchase the Rune once you’ve gotten the Reputation up.
- For Alliance: You purchase this from the Azeroth Commerce Authority faction when you are Friendly. The Vendor is located inside any of the Major Cities.
- For Horde: You purchase the Rune from the Durotar Supply and Logistics faction when you are Friendly. The Vendor is located inside any of the Horde Major Cities.
The cost of this Rune is 4 Gold and 50 Silver at Friendly Reputation. The price goes down if you have a higher Reputation. Once you’ve purchased the Rune of Single-Minded Fury, you simply learn it and you can Engrave it in the Gloves slot.
If you need help with any Reputation, feel free to check our SoD Reputation Services!
How to get the Steady Shot Rune for Hunter in SoD?
One of the more ‘useless’ Runes in Season of Discovery so far is the Rune of Steady Shot. It is quite simple to get, but never used so far. Here’s how to get it:
- Go to Arathi Highlands.
- In the South-East inside the Witherbark Village, there is a Lake.
- Within the lake there is an NPC called ” Needletooth “, it is a fish-like mob that is swimming in the lake.
Once you kill Needletooth, simply loot him and get your Rune of Steady Shot that gives you Engrave Belt – Steady Shot.
How to get the Dual-Wield Specialization Rune for Hunter in SoD?
If you are considering being a Melee Hunter in Season of Discovery, then you need to have proper Hunter Runes, and the Rune of the Scrapper is something that you must get. Before you go after this Rune, you have to be at least Level 32, considering you need to have Flare. Alternatively you can bring a Hunter friend that has it and he will use it and help you kill a mob that drops the Rune. Here is how:
- Go to Stranglethorn Vale.
- Once there, you should go somewhere around (31.9, 15.7).
- When you arrive at the coordinates, you should get a debuff called ” Danger! “.
- If you have this debuff it means that you should use your Flare ability.
- By doing so, a Bloodscalp Guerrilla will be revealed.
Simply kill the Guerrilla and loot the Rune of the Scrapper that gives the Engrave Boost – Dual Wield Specialization.
How to get the Invigoration Rune for Hunter in SoD?
This Rune is one of the better Runes that you can get for a variety of specializations that are not Melee based. If you want to play a ranged Hunter then the Rune of Invigoration is definitely one that you should get, and here is how:
- First of all we will head to Swamp of Sorrows.
- Once there we have to find Amaryllis Webb at (25.0, 54.2).
- Purchase a Entomology Starter Kit from him.
- Inside the Kit you will find a Bug Catching Net and a Field Guide.
In order to get this Rune you will have to catch THREE different types of critters:
Where to find the Arbor Tarantula
- The Arbor Tarantula is located in Stranglethorn Vale. At the Venture Co. Base camp near Lake Nazferiti. It can spawn on several of the tree stumps in the camp. Approximate Coordinates (43.8, 18.6),(44.2, 22.0),(45.6, 23.0).

- Go’Shek Farm northwest of Witherbark Village. Approximate Coordinates (59.6, 57.0), (61.2, 55.6) and (62.6, 56.0).
Where to find the Flesh Picker
- The Flesh Picker can be found in Desolace. There are a couple of spawn points around the Kodo Graveyard (51, 59).
Once you’ve obtained all three of these bugs, you will have to go back to the Swamp of Sorrows and speak to Amaryllis Webb again. Once you turn them in, you will get the Rune of Invigoration in your bags that you can use to Engrave Boots – Invigoration.
Note!!!: Make sure that you have space in your bags. If you do not – Amaryllis will take the bugs and you won’t get the Rune. The issue with this is that the Rune is given to you before the bugs are handed over, hence you need at least 1 free slot where the Rune will go into.
If by chance you didn’t have a free slot, you will have to collect the bugs all over again, so TRIPLE CHECK!
